  • Overview

    The Senior Fabric Manager is responsible for overseeing and maintaining the smooth running of the fabric department including all fabric buying, compliance and testing activity managing a team of 4 in London and 8 in China.  Key responsibilities focus on supporting the teams in the timely execution of fabric and trim sourcing and development following through to production working with a side variety of women’s woven and jersey base and bulk fabrics.


    Manage a team of 4 in London comprising 3 Fabric Technologists and 1 Technical Assistant:

    • Provide technical guidance and support.
    • Provide ultimate decision making in cases of quality issues.
    • Ensure that priorities are being met for each customer account.
    • Ensure that information is shared to maximise the most effective use of fabric.
    • Conduct team appraisals and annual salary reviews.


    Manage team of 8 in China, 1 Fabric Manager, 6 Fabric Technologists, 1 Trim Technologist:

    • Work closely with the China Fabric Manager and team to ensure resources in the China office are efficiently used.
    • Set work priorities between China and London deciding what should be done in each office.
    • Manage any issues or concerns raised by China office.
    • Conduct team appraisals and annual salary reviews.


    Fabric Sourcing & Development:

    • Oversee the strategic sourcing and development of fabrics for any customer, as required to ensure accurate understanding and execution of brief.
    • Ensure that prices on major key fabrics are updated and immediately available for senior management.
    • Negotiate bulk fabric prices with key suppliers when required.


    Supplier Relations:

    • Ensure frequent visits and meetings with key fabric suppliers.
    • Negotiate bulk fabric prices, minimums and lead times with key suppliers.
    • Ensure supplier queries and concerns are resolved quickly and effectively.
    • Negotiate fabric claims with suppliers.
    • Ensure that suppliers are treated with fairness and professionalism across all sites.
    • Manage supplier visits to London.


    Overseeing Fabric Team day to day duties:

    • Fabric sourcing; ensure the teams arrange regular meetings with mills and proactively source fabrics in line with design objectives working closely with the design team. Maintaining up to date knowledge of the latest fabrics and technologies available for presentation to designers.
    • Market research; maintain awareness of latest trends, fabrics, finishes, etc., being used by premium as well as high street retailers and brands.
    • Support the teams in working closely with the sales executives, buyers and designers on product and style requirements ensuring fabrics are fit for purpose and meet price objectives. Provide technical support where required.
    • Approval of lab dips and print strike-offs.
    • Ensure Fabric testing processes meet required standards working with suppliers to reach a resolution where standards fail.
    • Carrying out wearer trials as required.
    • Ensuring the fabric library is accurate and up to date.
    • Ensuring all duties are carried out in accordance with customer and factory critical path deadlines.
    • Collating all fabric information for proto samples and update computer spread sheets.
    • Coach, motivate and support the fabric teams.


    • Degree in Fashion Textiles.
    • Proven track record as a decision maker in a Senior Fabric Technologist or Fabric Manager role.
    • Experience working for a UK high street retailer or supplier.
    • Sound technical knowledge of both Far East and European woven and jersey fabrics including denim, natural fibres and synthetics and all relevant washes and finishes.
    • Extensive technical knowledge of fabric construction and performance.
    • Expertise in sourcing and negotiating prices, lead times and minimums for bulk.
    • Experience managing a large team.
    • Highly organised and skilled in managing priorities in line with customer critical paths.
    • Experience working closely with designers and customers.
    • Ability to work effectively under pressure in a demanding fast paced environment.
    • Skilled in leading through the success of the team and in coaching and mentoring individuals.
    • Skilled in building strong and positive relationships with suppliers, customers and colleagues at all levels.
    • Proficient in MS Office and customer systems.
    • Flexible to travel overseas.
